Jan 28-1972

Christmas fell on Friday of this year 1971. Two days before, on Wednesday evening we held our annual Christmas party. Our thanksgiving dinner was at our house, and all the family was here - except Mother. She had passed away the previous 13th of July. Needless to say, we missed her very much. Our Christmas party was held at Claire and Larry’s. Les and I were the first to arrive. We had only been there a short time when Carolyn Page, Elvin’s Daughter called me by phone.

Carolyn told me her father had been in Australia working for the government. (He flew many places in performing his job duties) he became ill and was hospitalized there for a week, after which time they flew him home to his own doctor; and a local hospital. The following Sunday night I talked by phone to Elvin at the Mercy San Juan Hospital of Citrus Heights California. He said among other things that the biopsy the laboratory had sent to the doctor, had come back “positive”. He was to undergo surgery the next morning, and it was my understanding that it would be early. (He went in at eleven am. I learned later) from about 1 PM to 3 PM. I felt Mother’s presence with me. I constantly worried about Elvin because of what he had said on the phone. He felt like everything would be fine with him though. He had not seemed to fear any bad results. I wondered why Mother’s presence had been felt so long - this even worried me more. Some how, I she knows all about Elvin.

Arnold, Carrie’s husband, called that evening and told us the sad news. Elvin had gone through the surgery fine, but the doctor’s found cancer in the liver. There were three of them - they removed two, but dared not touch the third. Elvin will be fifty-three 6 Feb of this year. (Written Jan 28-1972)

She has not contacted me.

Les, Lynn, Cal, Clell, Joe, and Arnold were Pallbearers. He had a military burial, and eventually Leone will be buried over the top of him.
